Welcome to Women’s (however you spell it) History month, fellow learners! Here at All Out Bible, women’s history is all inclusive, so you don’t have to wonder or worry. First, let’s get something annoying out of the way
Yes, there is an International Men’s Day. It’s on November 19th world wide. But no one really searches online for it, except on International Women’s Day. Here’s more information about it. Now, on with some basic history.
Why is Women’s History Month in March?
It was originally just a week long thing. It was done during the month of March so that events could be part of International Women’s Day. In President Carter’s 1980 proclamation, he used the speech as an opportunity to urge support for the Equal Rights Amendment. (The ERA is a whole other cluster.) Just a note: as progressive as President Carter’s speech was in some ways, in others it relies on old racist stereotypes about Native Americans we know are wrong now.
Does every country celebrate it on the same day?
Canada celebrates in October to honor a court case that gave women equal rights.
It looks like Russians observe this month in May, but I’m not certain.
The UK and Australia observe Women’s History Month in March.
There’s a Gender Museum in the Ukraine that houses a history of women’s rights and the effects of gender discrimination. It’s not open right now, of course. Their mission is on their about us page.
Now the main point of this post:
Queer women of faith during this history month. We’ll start with Elder Hattie Alexander-Key. She’s part of Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) Detroit. Here’s some of her bio from their site:
“Pastor Hattie Alexander-Key studied at Ohio State University toward a degree in Education. She left Ohio and returned to Detroit with her son where she became a Licensed Practical Nurse. She served as a nurse in hospitals and long-term facilities in the Detroit area for 30 years. Hattie has served as Deacon, Children’s Church Teacher, Bible Study leader, Prayer Ministry Team Lead, Altar Guild, Christmas Elves, Christian Education Lead and Lay Delegate.
